Restaurant group D&D London has this week opened its first hotel, the 80-bedroom South Place Hotel located between Moorgate and Liverpool Street in the City. A truly luxury experience, Conran & Partners has designed the interiors, while individual touches include bespoke artwork by young London-based artists, crisp cotton sheets by Josephine Home and toiletries by up-and-coming perfumer James Heeley.

As restaurateurs, D&D (Des and David) have been determined to make sure their first hotel is as much about meeting and eating well, as getting a comfortable night’s sleep. On the ground floor is an all-day British diner, 3 South Place, while the roof of the hotel is home to elegant seafood restaurant Angler and an outdoor terrace planted with lavender, olive trees and herbs. The man in charge of the menu and executive chef across the hotel is Tony Fleming, previously of One Aldwych.

“South Place Hotel is an unashamedly indulgent hotel, which reflects our personal tastes,” said Des Gunewardena, chairman and CEO of D&D London. “As restaurateurs, yes we love the bedrooms and the beautiful design, but what makes our hearts beat faster is what actually goes on in the place – eating, drinking, partying.”

The 3 South Place Bar comes alive at night with cocktails and music from local London DJs. Tipping a nod in the direction of nearby No.49 Moorgate (home to a Soviet spy ring in the 1920s), the hotel’s meeting and dining rooms take their names from secret agents. The residents’ games room and private club is called Le Chiffre, while there is also a gym, spa and secret garden.

South Place Hotel has its own South Place Hotel Art Prize, the winner of which will have their work displayed in a dedicated window on the ground floor of the hotel.
