Our Supplier Story: Flor de Caña Rum

Yo ho ho and a bottle of (sustainable) rum!

We couldn’t be happier to announce that we are stocking Flor de Caña Rum, the world’s first certified carbon neutral and fair trade spirit.

Read on to find out about the story behind this exciting brand and how we are putting sustainability at the heart of our decisions going forward as a company, including our suppliers.

In 1890, Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, a young adventurer from Italy, travelled to Nicaragua and found the perfect setting for the Flor de Cana distillery – at the base of the San Cristobal volcano. Despite being the most active volcanos in Nicaragua, Alfredo was determined that the fertility of the surrounding lands, enriched water and hot volcanic climate were worth the risk. These unique conditions proved instrumental in creating the rum’s recognisably unique and smooth flavour.

As well as its unique setting, Flor de Cana also offers a unique process, becoming a global leader in sustainable practices. Their carbon neutral production process involves raw materials, fermentation, distillation with renewable energy and finally natural aging.

From earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to civil wars and a plane crash, find out more about the thrilling 130 year adventure that brings us to the modern day imagining of Flor de Caña here.

Flor de Caña are investing in the future through their sustainability initiatives which can be seen across the production of their rum.

From planting 50,000 trees annually since 2005, using 100% renewable energy to distil their rum for over 10 years and capturing and recycling the CO2 emissions produced from the fermentation process, it is clear to see their commitment to looking after the planet.

They are also working to help the wider community, with policies such as free education for employee’s children at the company school (since 1913) and free healthcare for employee’s families at the company hospital (since 1958).

Plus, they have been the number one donor of APROQUEN since 1991, providing 600,000 free medical services to child burn victims and have been supporting American Nicaraguan Foundation alleviate poverty in Nicaragua for over 15 years.

We are proud to hold a 3 star Sustainable Restaurant Association rating across out restaurants, although we are always looking to improve in any way we can!

We aim to be carbon neutral internally by the end of 2022 and by the end of 2025, we aim to achieve net zero across the entire company.

This will include all suppliers, goods and services within the D&D London supplier chain, meaning that stocking brands such as Flor de Caña Rum is at the top of our priorities!

We look forward to achieving these goals and looking after the environment, after all great food doesn’t have to cost the world!
