Laura Catena is a fourth generation winemaker whose family is said to have pioneered the revival of Malbec. When her great grandfather Nicola Catena first visited Mendoza, Argentina from Italy all the way back in 1902, he was convinced he had discovered wine promised land. Up until then, Malbec found most of its use in blending however Nicola saw the huge potential to take it to new heights. His efforts to revive the wine, made the Mendoza region known, and played a major part in making the Argentinian Malbec so well regarded across the globe.
Channelling the same lust for adventure and innovation, Laura Catena began exploring the wealth of potential of other nearby regions which lead Laura to found the Caten Institute of Wine in 1995. The surrounding regions where inspiring with no two the same. Patagonia is a vast expanse, sparsely populated by humans but overflowing with wildlife. The weather can vary across the region but the mostly cool temperatures are perfect for early-ripening varieties such as Merlot and Pinot Noir. Thanks to these temperatures and strong winds the grapes are not bothered by other wildlife, keeping the grapes and their vines healthy.
Softly projecting spices, underlying notes of mint and eucalyptus combine with elegant notes of leather. The 2018 Pasarisa Malbec is a bold wine by taste but drinks very smoothly. Makes a wonderful paring with a beef, lamb or even poultry dish.
